Back to School, Back to Life: Reclaiming Routine During Your Cancer Journey

As the summer winds down, the familiar rhythm of “back to school” season signals a time of transition. For many, this time of year brings a return to routine—a structured schedule, renewed focus, and the comforting predictability of daily life.

Reclaiming routine after cancer treatment is not just about returning to what once was. It’s about creating a new normal that respects your current reality, honours your journey, and supports your continued healing. Here’s how you can approach this transition with intention and compassion.

 1. Start Small and Build Gradually

After treatment, your energy levels and stamina may not be what they once were. It’s important to recognise this and begin by incorporating small, manageable routines into your day. This could be setting a regular wake-up time, enjoying a daily walk, or planning consistent meal times. These small steps can help anchor your day providing a foundation for building a more structured routine over time.

2. Prioritise Self-Care

Your body and mind have been through a huge amount, and self-care should be at the forefront of your routine. Include activities that nourish your physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing. This could include gentle exercise, mindfulness practices, healthy eating, and sufficient rest. Please remember, self-care is not a luxury or selfish —it is essential to your recovery and long-term health.

 3. Reassess and Redefine Your Goals

Post-treatment life often brings a shift in priorities and values. Take some time to reassess your goals and redefine what success looks like for you now. Whether it’s returning to work, engaging in hobbies, or spending more time with loved ones, it is so important that your new routine aligns with your current values and aspirations. Setting realistic, meaningful goals will help you regain a sense of purpose and direction.

 4. Seek Support

Transitioning back to routine can be emotionally and physically challenging. Don’t hesitate to seek support from those around you—friends, family, or a professional. Joining a support group or working with a life coach can provide valuable guidance and encouragement as you navigate this new chapter.

5. Be Kind to Yourself

In my experience, this one seems to be more difficult than the others. But please, please be patient and compassionate with yourself. Rebuilding your life after cancer treatment is a process, and it’s absolutely OK to take it one step at a time. Celebrate the small victories and be kind to yourself when things don’t go as planned. It is frustrating, but not unusual and you can and will get back on track.

This “back to school” season, focus on reclaiming your routine in a way that supports your healing and honours your journey. By taking small, intentional steps, you can create a new normal that feels both energising and sustainable.

Remember, this is your journey, and you have the strength and resilience to move forward, one day at a time.
